Im getting my new AK-74 next week, and I have a few questions about the range. Im going to a 100 yard outdoor range north of here. How many rounds, on average, do you dump on a day at the range? I realize that my first time will probably be above average, but I am going to try to control myself :mamoru: Also, what other items do you take with you? So far I have these things as a must:
    Safety glasses
    Earplugs
    Ammo :uh:
    Water

Im sure im missing tons of stuff.....

I know it's an AK, but how about some cleaning supplies?

you need to bring ammonia/water 50/50 mix to clean the gun when you're done shooting if you are using surplus ammo. its corrosive. i shoot about 200rds at the 25yard indoor, i imagine it would be less at 100yards.

Is it worth it for me to buy an entire cleaning kit?

For the 74's I got an E. German(I think) tobaco can cleaning kit, has a pull through and some brushes, it was like $2.99 from interordinance or cdnn, other then that only extra cleaning item I use is a boresnake.

so Im assuming the "proper" way is to field strip and clean from the chamber?

Yes, always clean from the chamber. I guess the only guns that is truely difficult from, are M-14s, Garands, and .30 cal carbines (that I know of at least).

For an AK, or any semi-auto, I would suggest something like Breakfree, or Pro-Tech oil. Pro-Tech oil is good, because it doesn't burn off from heat easily. I use old-school Hoppes No. 9 solvent, and haven't strayed from it, but I am sure there are better things out there.

Yup, for a quick and cursory bore swab (really all my Garand--noncorrosive ammo--usually needs after a few dozen rounds), the op-rod catch to hold the bolt open is all I need...though sometimes I do a field-strip to make sure the 'snake won't pull the follower down and slam the bolt shut while I'm trying to clean it. Never had it happen yet, though.:x:
my 03A3 is even easier, lol, just remove the bolt.

I should have been more specific. I meant it is difficult to clean them out with a solid cleaning rod.

Depends on how many guns your taking with you to shoot.

If I take other stuff besides my AK, I'll just run 2 or 3 mags through her and be happy.

The first day I shot it though, I ran through 500 rounds.

I usually take my Mosin-Nagant to wear me out before I move on to other more expensive stuff to shoot.

Whatever you do, dont use the issue cleaning rod or any steel rod or chain for that matter. It will just fuck your muzzle up
