Does anyone have an optic for their AK? I've looked into it and I've thought more and more since I'm getting a tax return. The Larue Irondot is on top of my list, just because I like the style. I'm unsure on my interest on a side mounted optic. What should I expect to pay for a quality one, to compare (the Larue is $285).

    Input?

It replaces the rear iron sight.

"The AK-IronDot mounts easily onto an AK and provides both a sturdy rear sight as well as a compact red-dot sight."

"With the optic mounted, the iron sights co-witness in the lower-third of the view field. This allows an instant transition to the irons if the optic should fail."

Does anyone have one of these, or any AK optic? How did/does it work out for you? If you have a side mount, is it bulky?

I think Yar handled it at SHOT and liked it a lot. Side mounts are a little cheaper, the Iron Dot is tiny.

The T-1 will cowitness with an Ultimak mount which is probably the best set up available, but it will also run you close at least $600...

I got a Kobra reflex site on mine. Russian made and built extremely well. Can not beat it for the money, optic and the mount are just under 200$. Paid 170$ for mine.

One of my favorite set-ups is the ultimak + any aimpoint or red dot you want. IMO cowitness is over rated.

damn. I've been looking pretty much for that same mount for a while. Years ago (early 90's) Bushmaster sold something very similar, made for AK's, mounted on the top of the handguard. It was made for use with long eye relief pistol scopes.

I've seen the ones that replace the entire handguard, but those have little appeal to me. I want the one in that picture above. :hs:

I would be that if you found a section of rail, you could take that and your handguard to a machine shot or gun smith and they could fabricate something. Should be pretty simple, although you'd have to have a gas tube that locked up tight enough to hold zero.

I tapped an extra gas tube and put on a section of rail on it and it's held up for about 500 rounds so far.

I could ask Cobra if he'd try one for the AKs, rather than the SAIGA. What model?

    Norinco pre-ban underfolder, or a post-ban milled MAK90.

Ideally, I'd like to to keep the upper handguard original. I sure wish I could find a photo of that old Bushmaster mount, it would be easier to explain.
