Well, it's Fleet Week here and I'm planning on going down to the show. The longest lens I have is a 200mm and I know that's not enough but might as well give it a shot. Plus, from past shows I've seen here, they get pretty close. Any tips regarding exposure, etc.?

200mm is long enough if you wait. And have a crop factor camera.

    It's all I've ever used.

    Shoot in manual.

Hey I'm going to Fleet Week too... I think my friends are trying to get a good view at the Pier.

    I also have a 200mm... but it's at f/5.6. I hope it's sunny enough for a quick shutter speed.

What's a good shutter speed to use on jets anyway?

I usually compensate up a stop for this type of work - and shoot RAW obviously. You get a lot more usable data if you shoot hot and bring it down in post than vice versa. As far as exposure, I'll be out there with my 70-200 f/4L and I've never had an issue with it. If its hazy, ISO up :) 320mm on the crop is plenty of reach.

I got a 200mm f/4 on a 1.5 crop. It's a manual focus lens, but it seems that's the way to go :dunno: I'll be down at the Marina Green area. Planning on going Saturday - hopefully not as crowded as Sunday :x:

As fast as you can go. Jets are pretty easy to take pictures of.

So I just heard them practicing and went out to my balcony to see if I could get some practice shots to check for exposure. For those in the city, I live near the zoo, so you know how far away they are from where they perform.

They're like 3-4 miles away :rofl: I had to crop a lot for these so they won't be dots against a blue sky

This one they're the furthest away.

Closest they came to my area.

Seems you need to bump EV to about +1, the others were way too dark. I have a feeling 200mm should be enough now, but I guess I'll have to see how it turns out tomorrow :hs: These shots are hazy but with a closer distance, I shouldn't have much problem with haze right?

depends if you want panning shots against the ground or not to show speed, but i'd say anything over 1/500 would be good if there's no propellers in the pictures. a little less if there is to show propeller movement. I've got some pretty decent pics from airshows, but not of the blue angels, cause they're overdone too much.

Jets are rarely that low. Unless you have a really good spot. :hsd:

My prop pics suck. I took this and I think it's ok.
