I took these photos at the Chicago Air and Water Show yesterday. There are plenty of great places to see the planes. I chose Waveland and the lake, right behind the first tee at Waveland Golf Course. This is right where the planes get level as they head south to the show area at North Ave Beach.

Shooting a fast plane is one of the toughest things I've tried. I am not used to firing off rapid fire clicks. I found that that's the best way to do it as the planes don't stay in the same focus if I just hold the button.

I guess this where the faster AF time comes into play. I have a D80. How much faster is the AF on the D300/700?

As for the planes not staying in focus, did you use continuous AF mode? (not sure what it's called in Nikon cameras)

I like some of the compositions, but most of them are badly out of focus.

They are OOF from my lack of skills in capturing speeding planes. I will do better next year with the Blue Angels. The ones with the buildings are crops from a 100-300 lens. I was 2-3 miles away from the planes (me at Lake & Racine vs planes over The Loop and over North Ave).
