A while ago, AIM 6.1 suddenly wouldn't start anymore. Since then I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, but to no avail. I am running Windows XP SP2. Has anyone had a similar experience, and/or a solution?

Go back and try them until you find one that works. I've stuck with 5.5 forever. Tried and true.

It worked for a while, but now immediately when it starts it tells me it has "performed an error and needs to shut down."

Aim "Triton" works fine for me. Trillian and GAIM, on the other hand, routinely suffer connectivity problems as the various services upgrade their protocols, and even when I can connect, I still can't send files using third-party chat programs.

Only reason I like trillian, well there are alot more than one but the main is that it simply doesn't hog up an ungodly amount of ram just to sit in the tray.

It also doesn't work half the time. I have 2GB of RAM, so I can spare ten megs here or there.

You people really have no idea how much system resources it takes to provide a good user interface, do you? All those bitmaps and shit take up space.

i went back to aim after trying the others... trillian was a resource hog and took days to do anything, pidgin was buggy and unreliable. both had connectivity problems... worked some days, didn't others... so I just went back to the latest version of aim.

If I use AIM at all, it's 5.9. I hate anything higher.

I've used Trillian in the past and it would only work half the time, so I stopped using it. I downloaded and installed it again a few days ago, and so far so good. I guess I'll stick with it until it starts acting up again.
