right, it looks like a passive switch, which means that it basically disconnects the mouse from the computer you are switching from, to the computer you are switching to. The newer KVM switches are powered and have software that will keep a connection to the non-active system which tricks it into thinking it still has a mouse connected. These work much better, but are also pretty expensive

Heh, I bought one of those. Didn't work worth shit (connection cut in and out), so I returned it and bought a Linksys one (press scroll lock twice to switch computers). Haven't had a problem with it, and it was cheaper than the manual one when you add the cost of cables (Linksys one has integrated cables).

I've heard the manual ones are a bit abusive to hardware and not the healthiest way to go... Not sure if that still holds true or not.

I had one of those. Feel apart within a month and I had one hell of a time with the mouse.

Those things are old school. We have a couple of them collecting dust at my work's storage room.

It was about $70 Canadian I think. Would have been cheaper online, but I needed it that day. I'm pretty sure NewEgg has the same one I have.

  22. not only are the manual ones abusive and flakey, but a lot of them have noise issues, you'll lose finer detail at higher resolutions, my graphic design friends can't stand passive kvm switches.

I would chime in and say what everyone else has said, but that would be redundant. Basically the one you got is kinda crappy.. the passive style is more designed for switching parallel's and serial's..

I have the Belkin OmniView 4P.. LOVE it. ScrollLock-ScrollLock owns me.
