I've been trying to research but I can't find a clear answer. Each site either says 18 or 21.

What age can I purchase or own a shotgun, rifle, and hangun?

Must have a pistol purchase permit from the sheriff in order to get a pistol, whether gift or purchase, unless purchaser has NC CHP. They can be issued from the sheriff's office for 18-20, but it requires a couple extra steps.
Must be 21 to purchase pistol from FFL.
Some people don't worry about the PPP when in family, though legally it is needed.

In most states it's 18 to purchase rifles and shotguns, and 21 to purchase handguns. However, many state allow ownership of long guns under 18 if the gun was purchased by a parent. Even in gun-hating Massachusetts I was allowed to have low capacity rifles (holds 10 rounds or less) and shotguns (5 rounds or less) when I was 15 after I took a course and put in my paperwork for my FID card.
