Anyone over 30 do cleans still? I just started doing them the other day (31yrs old). Holy hell did I feel it in my back and upper neck. As you get older is there more risk in doing lifts like this? I am going to stick with it though as I believe it is a really good full body exercise.

there was a 71 yr old competing at the PL meet i competed in. think he squatted in the 600s and deadlifted around 500. ernie frantz

    edit

    Squat--Got 611, just missed 650.
    Took a token bench.
Deadlift--450 or so, close with 500.

I'm 31 and I do hanging clean and presses and power cleans.

I didn't do my first clean until I was probably 29.

Check your ego and go as light as you need to in order to have the proper form.

Can you learn proper form without someone coaching you?

I tweeked my neck the first time I tried cleans. Took a while to get that fixed. Now all is better and I will try again. I had a beast show me the ways of the clean. Glad he was there, helped out my form a ton. I would have really hurt something if he was not there to help me out.

Just got back , life is good!
It was a good work out. Did 4 sets of squats, 4 sets DL, 4 sets cleans, 4 sets of leg press and 4 sets of calf raises. Did a 12,10,8,6 rep program. No pain, just some beat down legs.

just make sure you dont go too heavy and use proper equipment

if your bars do not FREELY spin when you have weight on the bar and sitting on the floor, then you are using shit bars, and your clean form will suffer as there is no spin

if this is the case, use less weight

Bar not spinning less relevant with the snatch?

def. just as important that it spins when doing both - think abuot the lift you are doing in really slow motion, with your grip on the bar.. you are not supposed to have to use hand strength/wrist strength to rotate the bar- i f the bar does not spin then you wont be able to be as fast to get around and elbows under in cleans, and the bar spin momentum would probably be a factor in snatches

i have never tried a snatch using public gym bars for this reason.. and cleans are bad enough!

Cleans mess with my shoulders. I don't think I'm doing them right.
