Great thread! I've always wanted a 1911, but all the ones I've ever seen have been out of my price range. Now I have a whole lot more to think about...

Springfield mil-spec, RIA or armscor. Or spend a tad more to get springfield loaded.

Springfield Milspec. They usually sell for about $400 on sale in my area. While the Milspec is inexpensive, it's by no means "low end." As already noted the Milspec and GI are both fine starter 1911's and are good platforms if you ever want to upgrade your gun.

One reason for such a low price on these guns is the fact that the slides are produced in Brazil and sent over to the US for assembly.

Better order your RRA a couple months before you need it :noes:

RRA's are back ~1-2 months, but some in stock.

One thing to keep in mind that may be worth spending a tad more up front on something like a Springfield. I've heard of a few cases with RIA and some other cheap knock offs- more the really cheap knock offs then RIA but still a few- where parts interchangibility wasn't 100%. One nice thing with a 1911, buy a mil-spec or GI, and once you get the bug you can start buying parts for it.

I've seen several of them for < $800 at every gun show I've been to in the last couple of months. There's a guy down the street that sells them for $819 if I get really desperate.

I was shopping around last Nov and I was ready to buy, and no one had chrome lined barrels in stock. I waited 7 weeks from the date of payment for delivery
