I am designing a payload for a rocket that will go to 10,000 ft. Deploy a camera on a parachute with a casing. Then take wide angle downward facing digital snapshots on the way down.

    What I need:

Durable (gonna go through 15-20 g's)
    High quality
    Digital

    preferably:
    Auto-focus
    Electronic picture taking

    What I don't need:
    zoom
    any other features
a handheld, something on a board would be easier to work with

    (edit: budget 1-1.5k)

Unless I can get one at about 1/10 cost for academic purposes it's a little out of my budget.

if you dont need IQ you can get a video camera for the job, some record, but even cheaper are wireless ones.

if you want stills look for the lightest point and shoot that you can control with a cable remote, then have something trigger it to pop off shots :dunno:

with any digital camera that will have the resolution you want it's going to weigh way too much. I'd look into film if you're seriously thinking about this. but the thing is, if you just want pictures from 10,000 ft. go to the local airport and have someone fly you around at 10,000 ft. most small GA airplanes can make it up that high, and then you can carry any camera you want.

sounds about right. I don't know anything about skydiving, but if you had your camera strapped to you, I'm sure you could get some pretty sweet shots. :o

Well the point isn't the pictures necessarly, though that will be my job. The competition is the rocket and the camera is a part of the payload to our rocket. The whole idea is we have a rocket that goes to 10,000 feet. And it carries a team chosen payload of 10 lb. Not all that has to be camera (we are going to integrate other systems), but we are going to be recovering a rocket that weighs over 50 lb so weight won't be an issue for the parachutes.

Video camera. Meant as a joke.

That is cheap. Look up pricing on Viper-Thomspon Filmstream cameras. Red makes HD 24p movie-making more affordable for indie-crews and studios alike.
