will get BS in Electrical engineering in TeleComm and System/Control in June 08. the recruiter said i can join the navy as an officer after graduating with starting salary around $4000/month. When i said i want to work high tech jobs like nuke plant or sea/air navigating, he said some shit about enlisting as restricted and unrestricted officers? what is that? i didnt feel like asking further since this guy was so pushy i just wanted to standup and leave
    any advices/warnings or must-know catches/benefits?

Theres a reason for the bonus... I don't know why but it can't be good.

I have no clue whether he has dependents or not but I'm going to assume he would be a brand new officer and therefore his BAH wouldn't be that much...

Idunno, I've heard stories of ppl pretending to rate BAH when they really don't, just to get extra money.

As far as Restricted Line/Unrestricted line go, You'll find Nuke/Intell Officers and the like are Restricted to those type of jobs. If you go Unrestricted Line you can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING on the ship. One minute you'll be the Fire Control Officer in charge of Ordinance and the like the next you'll be the Damage Control Assistant over all your job is to maintain the damage conrol/firefighting type shit.

You'll start out as a division officer and probably do 2 tours as such then next would be a dept head tour or two before making xo then eventually co if you stay that long. Unrestricted Line guys kinda get the shaft because of all the shit they're expected to learn in a short amount of time.

This leads to the biggest 'problem' with the navy, all these damn JOs that have 18month tours onboard trying to make a name for themselves while most of the enlisted have a 36month+ tour onboard, Zeros are running a sprint while the enlisted are running a marathon and the overzealous young zeros wanting to change the world. Good luck to ya, if you have any questions about navy life etc...feel free to ask.

I don't see how? You either have dependents or you don't. You either live off post or you don't. You either pay child support or you don't. It's pretty cut and dry...

You would be surprised what people do..

Oh yeah.. And it's a felony... And USAF folks get to deal with me, Navy with NCIS and Army with CID...

I HATE those cases.. Although they are really easy to prove. ..

out here in hawaii BAH is above 1000 with no dependants at starting and gets pretty damn high with rank, and it was the same way in california

keep in mind the navy doesnt have too many bases in podunk middle of fucking nowhere where the cost of living is really cheap, most bases are dead in the middle of huge jam packed cities where even small shitty apt's cost alot...

On my last ship, boot ensign divos, I'd usually refer to them by a facial expression that usually looked something like this:

In Japan it's even better $1800+ for down in the Kanto Region for E-5 goes through the roof if you have family.
