    Thinking in Java, Bruce Eckel.
4 out of 5 stars on Amazon, 271 reviews. I personally did not like it, but majority of people do. I bought this book because it was required for a class. After reading the first page stating that it was available for free online, I got a little pissed off. But anyway, here's the book online free. You want to look for Thinking in Java, 3rd edition.

    Other books:
Core Java 2: Volume 1 - Fundamentals (serious readers)
Core Java 2: Volume 2 - Advanced Features (serious readers)
Head First Java (easy, more fun reading... but the material itself is still serious)
