I dont game much anymore and not up to date with latest technology but was thinking about a light upgrade for some newer games.

Can I get away with just a new video card and be ok? Was thinking a 8800gt or something. Or is my cpu a bottleneck now?

    Current Specs:
AMD FX-62 (bought before the new intels :uh: )
    Asus Crosshair motherboard
    BFG 7900gtx oc video card
    3 gb RAM
    Vista 64
480W Antec powersupply (bigger one died and just slapped in what I had)
    couple of hard drives
    basic dvd/cd player

well,... the 8800GT will benefit working with a faster processor, but the FX62 will not cripple it either. it should just be fine.

i'd upgrade the cpu, card, and the PSU,... but that's me.

    deployed.
wow, 480 puts out enough on all the rails for that? :eek4:

8800 series would be a large step up.

8800 card, psu, cpu would me my personal order of upgrade, but to each their own :bigthumb:

I put in a 8800gt last night and everything seems stable so far. probably do a psu and the rest (hard to stop at just one :noes: )

any suggestions on cpu? should I do the mb too and go all intel?

    AMD route:
how much oc have you done on that FX-62?
if you managed 3.2 or above,.. there's really not much gain on the current Athlons besides better power consumption and thermal output.

coming from an FX-62,... the only athlon chips that I would consider an upgrade are the 6000+, the 6400+, or the 5000+ Black Edition,... all overclocked to 3.4ghz or above. other than that, keep the FX-62.

then there's the Phenoms if you want tri-core or quads.
if you do take this route, its better if you also upgrade your board to AM2+.
it will work on the crosshair but you will not use the Phenom's full potential.

    Intel route:
stock vs stock, your FX-62 is comparable to the E4600 allendale. similar performance on benchmarks except that the FX-62 is a power hog.
So,.. any Core 2 chip (duo or quad) above the E4600 is an upgrade.
Even the low end chips that overclocks past 3.0ghz is an upgrade.
what chip? depends on your budget.

IMO,... if you want to upgrade your cpu and mobo, consider a new build and keep your current rig intact.

Very good info Doomsday, I'd agree.

If your cmoputers running alright, why upgrade? I think you're fine to keep it the way it is. If anything, maybe a raptor would be anice performance boost. And a reformat if things are slow. That should keep you going for a while
