I was thinking of hiring a freelance web developer from overseas using one of those freelance websites but not sure on experiences anyone has had? Main reason is that their cheaper then normal, but is there a huge downside to hiring overseas workers (say from India, Pakistan, Russia etc..)?

What are normal rates for web development [locals], mainly scripting and database work?

The week after you pay them to write the script, they will be reselling it all over the net.

More than once I have found a closed freelance ad for something I needed. I contacted the people who did the work for the other folks and was able to buy the scripts for pennies on the dollar.

what languages and what database? I may be able to refer a guy to you if you're interested in paying a fair wage for the work.

I'd rather just learn myself before trying to work with some 3rd world foreigners.

I've done a lot of work on rentacoder.com and my base rate is around $75/hr. As with anything....you get what you pay for.

Yea, and assuming you would have to pay more afterwards to get shit clarified and or rescripted.

PHP and also need a mysql database

I started learning yesterday picked up a for dummies (php + Mysql for dummies) book and just starting to read it. I know basics. I figure I can learn myself then do it myself and save some $$ and use it in the future if needs be.

    imho

I agree with this part: you get what you pay for, for the most part. Cutting corners now could cost you more money later. I've used someone local and boy did it costs me. Doesn't matter the distance. Judge based on skill and get three different contractor prices for the same job.
