This is an odd situation, but I wanted to see if you folks could offer some advice.

I'm helping a local shop get online with google. Part of this involved re-doing their website. They had registered their domain name through 1dollarhosting/webcountry, which is a completely crooked company by all accounts. Some reviews are here:

    http://hostjury.com/reviews/Webcountry
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/webcountry-tarzana

A while ago, I had them log into their webcountry account to change their hosting plan to a more reliable company, and change the nameservers to point to zoneedit. WebCountry immediately emailed them demanding to know why they made those changes.

Yesterday, a "Danny Taylor" called them saying they owed $180.xx for "services due." They asked what the bill was for, but the person from Webcountry wouldn't elaborate on the charges. They also threatened to "hold the domain name hostage," and had already gone into the account & changed the nameservers back to Webcountry. Additionally, the login used to access the control panel was disabled.

I decided to call them to find out whatever I could. The guy answering the phone initially refused to tell me his name, and eventually said it was "uh...William." When I asked about the account, he kept demanding to know who I was and "why I cared." I mentioned, politely, that I needed to change the whois information for that name, and transfer it to a different registrar. His exact words were "Yeah, that's never going to fucking happen." He then hung up on me.

I've called back multiple times, and get hung on each time. At this point, they were holding the domain name hostage, and refuse to talk to anyone.

What, short of going down to Tarzana CA, can we do? All ideas would be welcome.

    Thanks!

They're probably not an ICANN accredited registrar so assuming your client's details are on the WHOIS they may be able to force the actual registrar to release the details to you. It's likely to be Enom/OpenSRS/WildWestDomains

I seriously want to go down to Tarzana in person and knock some heads

at the very least, does anyone know how I can auto-dial their phone number over and over again to piss them off? :mamoru:

Contact ICANN/Tucows, they own the domain.

yeah, post their shit on 4chan and promise/deliver hot jailbait pics in your thread lol.

Sounds like a punk ass bitch "company" that would probably flinch with some very basic legal threats. Find someone to write up/email/mail this "company" a threat letter and pass the fees onto the client. Then once you have the domain at a new registrar post the "companies" info on 4chan again lol.

Good luck.. had the same thing happen a few years back with my brother's website. Signed up to a local hosting company, that got bought by a malaysian hosting company. Local business was fine, good guys, but once they sold the business and it all moved o/s it went to shit. The new company were basically scammers, but since the domain details were in their name, we couldn't do shit. Ended up having to find a new domain name and rebrand his entire business. :(
