Hi - not sure if this is the right forum for this question.

Looking for a camera that takes good arty-type quality pics either primarily a video camera that takes good pics, or primarily a stills camera that takes video too.

Needs to be quite small/compact with all the gear needed to connect to the PC.

Something that doesn't kill batteries within 30mins.

Budget isn't great - I want the best I can get for around about $350 - $400 (might be persuaded to go slightly higher)

    Let me know, thanks.

The camera doesn't take "arty-type" pictures, you do. Any digital P&S will work for your needs. I'd take a look at Canon's P&S lineup.

i think canon SD870 takes pretty good photos and has a really good video quality. has a digital stabilizer so you don't get so much of the shakes. that's around 350 ish so it matches your price range.

Ok so you guys recommend Canon.

Are there any special features I should look out for and make sure it has? (such as the stabilizer for example).

It'll be used for taking pics of drunken parties, freaks at festivals etc. just as much as taking arty-farty pics.

What's P&S? I'm not up on the lingo (point and snap?)

Oh, it's for a girl - so I need to make sure it's not overly technical to use.

    Appreciate your help.

So what is it I'm after - a camcorder or camera?

What's all this MiniDV, DVD Digital, High Def, Digital compact, Digital SLR. All listed under Cameras on the Canon site.

I had a feeling this wouldn't be simple :hsugh:

What's a good website to buy from?

Oh, and list the essential & handy features I should look out for please :x:

you're after a digital camera, not camcorder. most camcorders don't record anything over 3-4mp anyways.

When it comes down to what you're needs are, you can buy almost any p&s camera from any of the top brands (canon, fuji, nikon, sony & even panasonic) and get what you want. Seeing as you don't really know what that is, you really need to get to a store and play with them all. Just a helpful hint...stay away from kodak, casio and HP cameras. most people nutswing on canon cameras in here so don't take that as the "end all" solution. the store + you playing with them = success.

I want to thank all the geeks that have so far chipped in with some good advice. The world would be a much more complicated place without geeks.

Ok - last few questions and I'll stop bugging you guys.

I need the ability to shoot some video - I'm guessing all cameras shoot some video, right?

I've decided on Canon - most folk here have mentioned it and it's easier to just decide on a brand and then worry about which type of camera.

As I said, the basic requirements are that it's compact and takes as good a picture quality for $400 as I can get - and some video too.

Suggest some model numbers and I'll pick one :bigthumb:

Mojito - can you find out the model you're talking about?

a DSLR won't shoot video, but nearly ever P&S will. just as almost every video camera will shoot stills. Its just a compromise on one side or the other.

mojito, thanks for the link but it doesn't give much info on the product. No dimensions etc.

Could you have a look at these links for me and tell me if you think this is the kind of thing I'm after and which of the three would you go for?

    I need this by Oct 5th - hence I'm in a panic.

they're all fine but don't offer any kind of manual control if thats important. stills will be better than what I posted, video will not. its all a trade off

if you want more info, take the product name and google it

Yes! I don't want a totalitarian camera! Need the option to go manual surely?

    Or do I?

What similar type camera would give me manual options?

What about the shutter speed priority stuff and digital Zoom during video?

    This is driving me nuts.

Oh and rather than AA batteries, are there ones with a rechargeable internal battery pack that connects to AC?
