Ok. I've been looking around, and I think i'm going to build a system. When It comes to processors, i'm a bit lost. In a magazine it says "ADM Athlon XP 3200 Processor outperforms competative 3.2GHz processors, Quantispeed architecture operates at 2.2Ghz". Now how does this work. :ugh: It says it outperforms 3.2GHz, but only operates at 2.2? How does this work? Is there any truth to this statement?

ADM!?!?! oh noes another processor company???????/// first you mean AMD. secondly from bench mark comparissons I have seen the comparisons fall off around the AMD 2600+ so that the 2600+ AMD is pretty equivalent to the 2.6 from intel but the athlon 3200+ vs the pentium 3.2 the pentium wins by quite a bit in most apps

I actually do a lot of intense processing and I really have a hard time justifying the latest and greatest on my desk. As a an average user, my advice would be to buy the slowest, but current generation of either chip.

Up until the AMD XP 2600+ or so, AMD had a lead in speed/power. The Quantispeed was their term for the way the AMD processors compute twice as much info per clock cycle compared to the Intel processors.

But now that Intel has an 800mhz front side bus, they've sort of made up the difference and left AMD lagging. AMD and Intel have flip flopped ever since AMD released their K6 processor. At the moment, i'd go Intel.

I thought it was out, I saw benchmarks in Maximum PC...

or do you mean the 128-bit ADM

I vote AMD (ADM :ugh: ) simply because the Barton 2500 > * in terms of bang per buck. Its such a flexible processor. If left at stock speed, you can UNDERvolt it and get a very significant drop in heat (less heat=less cooling required=less noise) or you can OC it up to 3200 quite easily. All that for $90 = win. :yum:

    ADM and Pentium both suck.

Ill take and Intel and AMD processor though.

But right now ill take a AMD64 > *. Only problem with Itaniums is that they emulate 32bit and its much slower then AMD64's backwards compatible.

but then who needs more then 640k of memory anyways!

P4s are built purely for clock speed because Intel lost the race to 1 Ghz and pure clock speed advantage has been Intel's selling point ever since. From what I have read, the latest P4s really are not layed out or designed in a very efficient way (I'm talking the processor architecture that is on the CPU die) and therefore the AMD chips can run slower, but get more work done per clock cycle.

The new Intel Pentium M chips are totally bad ass though. They rock all other processors out in my opinion. They have super low heat output, like 35 watts versus 65 watts. A 1.6Ghz PM will basically be indestinguishable from a P4 3.0Ghz from the user's perspective. Too bad they are so expensive and only a few mobo's support them :hs:
