with 4 slots, two being taken by 256 sticks and two open, could I just put two 512 sticks in the open slot and run with 1.5G of total ram? And if so, does it make a difference if the first two slots have 512 and the second two have 1G?

Or... do all the sticks have to be the same capacity?

going by PC's, and assuming macs would be the same. it shouldn't make a difference.

actually it does. I checked the manual. Start from the top, add memory from the inside out on the rows, beginning with the largest to smallest size memory chips.

I think they gotta be paired up equally and also the larger sticks should be the first slots and then the smaller ones after that.

    edit: damn answered already
