I just got a new IDE hard drive. I would like to add it to my system. I have a ASUS P4P800 Deluxe motherboard.
    Specs here:
    http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m...Deluxe&langs=09

It has onboard Parallel ATA IDE Raid. I already have 2 hard drives on the regular IDE channel. Can I just add one hard drive to the Raid controlled IDE slot without setting up an array? Or do I have to set up an array? If I can just add a drive, can it be the drive containing the OS, or just a storage drive?

I would prefer not to set up RAID, I don't really need it, and I would have to buy another hard drive to match one of my current.

you dont need to set op a RAID array you can just connect 1 disk to it, and you can put your OS on it.

    Cool, thanks.

Can I move my existing hard drive with the operating system on it to the Ultra ATA 133 spot? Will it automatically recognize the move?

I would NOT recommend that... the on-board raid controller is stuck on the PCI bus, which is limited to a shared 133MB/s... Shared with all of your other devices (sound card, nic, firewire, usb, etc). Not to mention the Promise controller is a junky software solution.

For a 3rd drive, definitely throw it on the raid controller... But I would never move your OS there unless you had to have it on an array.

Plus the IDE controllers and the raid controller are most likely not the same chipset, and most OS's freak out when you change the hdd controller on them.

Why oh why didn't you get yourself a SATA drive? IDE is dead, long live SATA!

I won one of the OT XMAS Contests for 250 GB IDE Hard Drive. :bigthumb:

I do some video editing so I could really use the extra space. I will put this new drive on the raid controlled ATA133 by itself. I can store a lot of raw avi video capture on 250gb. :naughty:
