    Either way I'm addicted.

I just had shoulder surgery and they had to anchor the tendons into my bone. So as you can imagine, I'm in a decent amount of pain. This happened a little over a week ago. Since then, I've been in a constant "medicine head" state. :dunno:

Sorry...I guess it was stupid of me not to put what they put me on. :o

    Vicodin for pain

    Darvocet for spasms

I have to use the two alternatively, depending on how I feel that morning.

I would go ahead and take the scheduled doses.........but watch those refills. Most docs will start to taper you off of the narcotics, towards the end of your therepy....a few weeks, i wouldnt worry about. You start buying them on the street and we've got a problem.
Try to wean yourself to maybe a Tylenol 3 or something lesser than Vicodin in a few weeks, but surgery is nothing to sneeze at. Also, powerful painkillers can hinder your recovery because they make you think you feel better than you actually do.

I'm too week to actually do the therapy. I've got another week before I can even take my sling off for showers.

I've been following the dosage schedule as well. It pretty much puts me in a constant phsyical state of fuzzy headed ness. I can't speak really well. But during this time, my mind is at it's sharpest. I honsetly feel like I'm on the edge of addiction.

Well, try to keep that out of your head. You are using, hopefully not abusing, sched.III narcotics.....not too big a deal. You WILL get physically addicted if you abuse. But getting over a Vicodin addiction means:
Step one: "Detached" feeling for a day or so
    Step two: Constipation
Step Thre: Diarreha from getting over the consitpation.
You'll be fine. I wouldnt plan any meetings anytime soon.

If you don't mind me asking, what happened? I had virtually the same surgery like 15 months ago. I was in a nasty snowboarding accident - recovery took me around 3/4 days of bed rest, and then my arm was in a body sling for like 6 weeks.

Be careful with those pills, they can QUICKLY back-up your system if you know what I mean, and you'll start throwing up everything you eat. If your doctor hasn't done so already, ask him about docusate or a similar product.

As far as the addictions go, shoulder surgery was more painful than my lung collapses, and I'm SURE you'll need the medication. Follow the instructions the surgeon gave you - I'm sure you'll be ok. If you need help, just ask.

I was tightening some die bolts over head and in an extended position at work.
I slipped in some oil or something similar and flew off the little stand and spun and finally slammed the back of my shoulder into the press itself, causing it to dislocate. From then on, it was a shitload of partial dislocations. They waited 4 days to get me to a doctor, and in that time, they forced me to work without restrictions. So it made it worse and worse. Finally went to the company doctor, and they jerked me around for four months, until i got to a specialist. by that time though, it was so bad that I could just reach out for my Coke and it's slip on me.

I disagree completely. A good way to seek more information, and figure out if maybe you do have a problem is to go to a meeting and see what it's all about. Hit up Narcotics Anonymous and ask some other recovering addicts what it was like for them, and see if you relate. Keep going to meetings for a little while to figure out if you really have a problem, if you do, then you no where to go when it's time to get clean ... If you don't, then you know what to watch out for in the future....

Just because you don't go to meetings isn't any reason to tell others not to.

agreed... the only reasons to avoid narcotics anonymous that stand any legitimacy in my opinion are due to overwhelming personal bias against it - which are generally either based on misinformation (not knowing what its really about) or personal denial... (like still wanting to smoke weed)

    The benefits are immeasurable

I actually attended one of the meetings and talked with several individuals. I stated my concerns and we talked about my surgery. After that, I decided to just ease off of them.
The cold weather has been kicking my ass pain wise, but I only take it when tylenol won't control the pain, which is rather bearable in itself.

So far, I've been about a month without the pills!

In fact, I'm taking it a step further and upping my phsyical therapy and even starting to attend martial arts classes to gain further disciplin and a better state of mind. I've thought clearer than I ever have!

    Thanks again Guys!

Good job, stop in the NA meeting and get a 30-days clean keytag.

If you are only taking the prescribed dose short term then you should be ok, but you are obviously worried so talk to your docs about it.

I smashed my hand pretty bad and was on lots of painkillers, didnt get addicted, I saw the nice fuzzy sleepy feeling as just a pleasant side effect. But I can see how people can get addicted to that numbness.

This is exactly what is attractive about drug use when addiction takes it's course. Most of us ARE addicted to the numbness that any drug brings in the later part of our addiction. Addicts don't like to feel, and drugs take away feelings, so they are a perfect match.
