I'm on 5mg of regular adderall to treat depression. its nice it gives me energy and a positive outlook but at the same time I notice that I get worried about my future more when i'm on it. Its so hard because it makes me happy but at the same time it makes me worried at times. What should I do?

Yeah man give it a chance... How long have you been on it? Most drugs take a solid month before the full effects come into play... You gotta remember these are chemicals in your brain, they need to adjust and you will.

    Good luck.

Adderal is not a med for depression. What do you mean when you say "it makes me worried at times"?

That is bullshit. Adderall's full effects occur after it reaches peak levels in the blood (3 hours for IR, 7 for ER). However, this may change with tolerance over time. It is bizarre that you were prescribed it as an anti-depressant but it certainly has that effect. The difference is that it works reliably and starts fast. It can cause racing thoughts and anxiety but it can also cause focus and calmness. This is situational and dose dependent.

I imagine he's referring to the anxiogenic properties of most traditional stimulants - usually why you try to avoid it if possible in patients with hx of anxiety disorders.

Oh and :werd: on being prescribed for depression. That's a last resort medication. You'd want to see other stuff expended first.

You don't have to keep taking the Adderall if it's making you feel that nervous. It's not like the SSRIs which require constant maintenance to be effective, and at only 5mg you're unlikely to see any serious withdrawal effects.

That's what I'm guessing but it might as well be a general worry about "talking pills" and being addicted to them since some people are not in favor of meds. Just wanted to clarify.

Adderall is not for depression what you're feeling is anxiety and its a double edged sword, it makes you WANT to be productive....and when you are that anxiety is replaced with satisfaction.

    Get some work done.

    Go back to school.

Do something productive. Also 5mg is like NOTHING, i'm surprised you're even feeling that unless you're around 100lbs or something.

I used to love the stuff, bought my buddys prescription, 60 30mg pills, was on it for a month, my work performance skyrocketed, but I built up a tolerance fast and my depression kept getting worse. I was also on vyvanse for a while, I stopped both. The comedown for both got to be too much to handle, EXTREME depression, anxiety like I've never had before.

He posts frequently, always about depression and medication. From the last time I would say he's on 4 different medications so I'm curious for an updates to what exactly he is taking.

I hear ya, it's kinda a trade. Yeah you're motivated and happy, but also anxious and worried. I'm on 20 a day. I tend to just only take it on days I work or need motivation, and take it early in the morning. That way by the time it wears off it's not really a problem.

    Dude, you're basically taking speed.

Adderall is a brand-name pharmaceutical psychostimulant composed of mixed amphetamine salts

I took it for a while for ADD and got off of it because of the jitters and sleep problems it caused. I didn't know they prescribed it for depression.

Your response to the treatment may indicate that the diagnosis is wrong...

This is equivalent to telling someone on morphine they're taking heroin. Not quite accurate.

Happens for some people. It is a stimulant, after all. And no, they don't prescribe it for depression except perhaps in extreme cases of unrelenting depression.

The diagnosis was wrong. That doctor had me taking pills to sleep, pills to wake up and pills to control the side effects of the other pills. I have a much better doctor now.
