    ACPD gun change criticized

    By FOSS FARRAR

The Arkansas City Police Department is changing to another brand of handguns - and that has City Commissioner Mell Kuhn upset.

Since Kuhn received a copy of a recent memo from the police chief to the city manager asking the city to fund the change, he has sent a series of e-mails to City Manager Steve Archer criticizing the proposal as adding an unneeded expense to the city budget.

But Archer and two other city commissioners today countered that Kuhn should not try to "micromanage" city department head decisions made with the approval of the city manager.

Police Chief Sean Wallace said today Archer has approved his suggestion to replace 10-year-old H&K .45 pistols with Glock model 21SF service weapons. Twenty-four new Glock pistols are ordered.

The Glock pistols are a good tactical weapon and more accurate than the H&Ks, Wallace said.

The cost of replacing the H&K pistols for new Glocks and holsters is approximately $3,200, Wallace said. That cost comes out to about the same to send officers to the east coast for training on the H&K pistols to be certified by the manufacturer as armorers.

But training on the Glock pistols would be done in Hutchinson by the manufacturer at no cost.

"We have to keep an armorer at the department to identify severe mechanical malfunction," Wallace said.

He said the reason for the change is the difficulty in getting replacement parts for the H&Ks.

"Since March of this year, we have been waiting for a left-handed de-cocking lever for a gun for one of our left-handed officers," Wallace said. He added that he had talked with a Kansas City gun dealer today who agreed that H&K parts were sometimes slow to arrive.

"We can walk across the street to Double Eagle and practically get (Glock) parts off the shelf," Wallace said.

Kuhn countered that there is nothing wrong with H&K pistols and that parts are readily available. He said he knows about guns and is a nationally ranked shooter in three-gun competition.

Kuhn received the chief's memo, as did other city commissioners at Monday's meeting. The memo was included with the normal "memo packet" commissioners receive, said Commissioner Patrick McDonald.

McDonald criticized Kuhn, saying that commissioners should not try to direct department heads on what to do. They should go through the city manager instead.

Kuhn said he agreed that the gun purchase is a city administration decision. He added that he e-mailed Archer, not Wallace.

"We were sent a memo," Kuhn said. "My job is to oversee expenditures and the direction of the city."

Hmm. I have a hard time picturing a 3 gun guy not happy with the department going to a glock. The glock is very popular in 3 gun because of it's lack of a manual safety. The pistol can be just dropped on the dump table and considered safe, where as those with manual safeties have to have safeties engaged. This is slower and risks a DQ if the safety is accidently left of or flips off while the gun is set down. OK enough about why 3 gun guys love glocks. On the other hand the HK is garbage.

The guy must really be into his job or the city must be seriously broke to be sweating $3200.

new guns have nothing to do with making downtown look beautiful... and that's all they seem to worry about.

Ark City case attracts TV crew

    By FOSS FARRAR

The Jodi Sanderholm case has caught the attention of a producer of "Extreme Forensics," a show focusing on criminal investigations. It airs on the Investigation Discovery Channel.

A crew from the show plans to come to Arkansas City next week to interview several investigators and Sanderholm family members.

In March, a judge sentenced Justin Thurber to death for the killing of Sanderholm a little more than two years before. The 19-year old Cowley College student's body was found on Jan. 9, 2007, four days after she went missing.

"It's an honor that they actually researched Jodi's case on their own and wanted to do a show on it," Cindy Sanderholm, Jodi's mother, said today.

Cindy Sanderholm said a producer of the show asked if they could come to Ark City to do interviews, and she said yes. "If anything good can come out of it, we're all for it."

Brian Sanderholm, Jodi's father, provided the Traveler a copy of the e-mail from "Extreme Forensics" producer Jessica Grumet that said her crew plans to arrive in Ark City next Wednesday. The crew will stay about a week, she said.

Among the people Grumet plans to interview are: KBI agent David Falletti, Arkansas City Police Chief Sean Wallace, other members of the Ark City Police Department, Equusearch team member Tim Miller and trackers Ron and Jon Cannon.

She also plans to meet with the Sanderholms, Grumet said in the e-mail sent Tuesday.

If they have .45ACP P7's, Glock would be giving them gold plated, diamond studded G21SF's.

he's a small town police chief, that got to be on the national news a couple years back... what else do you expect???

i remember 10 years ago, he was the detective incharge of patrolling pawnshops... looking for stolen goods, and was a major douche back then.

Kuhn assails McDonald at commission meeting

    By ANDREW LAWSON

Thursday's City Commission work session was a tale of two meetings. Commissioners largely agreed with each other regarding issues on the agenda for Tuesday's meeting, but a disagreement that began last week over the police department's request for new handguns flared up again at the end of the session.

As the meeting was nearing an end, Commissioner Mell Kuhn had a few choice words for Commissioner Patrick McDonald, who last week supplied the Traveler with copies of e-mails sent by Kuhn to City Manager Steve Archer regarding the new guns.

In the e-mails, Kuhn criticizes the police department's plan to switch to Glock handguns as an unnecessary cost. The e-mail conversations were between Kuhn, Archer and Police Chief Sean Wallace, who defended the change.

    Kuhn property taxes overdue

Commissioner says he'll pay them soon

Commissioner Mell Kuhn has not paid the property taxes on his residence and is on the county's delinquent property tax list.

Kuhn said today he intends to pay his taxes eventually, probably "next week." The delinquent taxes, assessed on his home at 521 W. Kansas Ave., are for the amount of $771.83.

"I don't want to be the first in line to pay," he said. "I don't like to shell out money. I don't like to pay taxes. Nobody does."

But he said he believes in paying taxes and that doing so is a "privilege." He emphasized that his failure to pay is not a tax protest.
