Search "hard reset iPod" on the Apple support forums page.

I think it's either hold "up + center" or "down + center" for 5 seconds and that will force the ipod to reboot.

Worst likely case, you have to reformat the ipod and sync it anew. Chances are good that nothing needs to be done once you reboot it, though, especially if it was just charging and not synching.

Nah, I've gotten impatient with it unmounting and just unplugged it. Or when I bring it right from my cars adapter to the computer it own't mount properly so I gotta hard reset it.

If it's one of the current models just hold the center 'select' button while holding Menu until you see it reset.

Reboot. Mine resets by turning hold ON then OFF, then holding down middle and up for 5 seconds and then you'll see the APPLE logo, and its rebooting.
