If you're on Windows XP, you can set up Remote Desktop.

Just right-click on "My Computer" and click on the "Remote" tab. You'll need to have your system set up so you have to log in with a password. You'll also need to punch a hole in your router and foward port [size=-1]3389 to the computer you want to connect to.

    Here's Microsoft's page on it.

that seems like it would do that job. i could set that up but is there another way bc the external HD is set up over a file and print server as a network storage device so its not directly attached to a remote desktop computer.

(i could map the drive to a desktop on the network so it is accessable via remotly connecting to the desktop i guess too. )

If you have XP pro you can set up IIS to act as a server you can access files from elsewhere.
