I want to mix it up a little and do some standing calf raises. Help me out with the physics of it.

When you guys stand on a short step or a box, do you need to put a counterweight on the side opposite you? No one in my gym does these with any substantial weight so I just have no idea. I just don't want to go rolling off a step with 4 bills on my back.

i usually do shoulders/legs same day so i just move forward in the squat rack or at the end of the bench, stand on the bar thats on the ground and shrug/calf raise at same time...but i dont shrug that heavy so it might be a little tougher for you...

no, you dont. need a counter weight.. and you probably dont need 405 lbs on your back to do calf raises..i'd lower the weight and concentrate a bit more on those reps.. i think the calves are one of those muscles that you reallllly have to make the mind-muscle connection on..

But am I going to get growth doing eleventy reps? My working weight on seated calf raises is one plate away from the stack.

i think that's the only way to do it.. crazy big pumps for decently high reps.. you'll have to ask Pur to be sure. though i know calves on most people are hit or miss.

I largely follow Neo's workout log (see: exclusively) for my workouts. I did this for calves on friday and it tore me up better than ANYTHING I've ever done for calves.
10 sets 10 reps standing BB calf raise
    First 5 sets 225
    Next 5 sets 135
10 seconds rest between each set.

    They're still sore today .

edit: neo did 225 all the way through, I just dropped weight to keep squeeze going

I do them on a machine most of the time. IF you do barbell don't do them on a step. Just do them standing on the floor. Squeeze to the point of cramping at top of movement. What I have found that works is almost jumping into the movement using my calves.

    Thanks.

If that's what you do I'll try doing them on one of the squat racks. We have a couple on 2" platforms so I'll just raise the pegs up my shoulder and try that.

I do standing calf raises on just a two by four, so a little more ROM.

    225x15
    315x15
    dropset:
    315x15, 225x15, 135x15, 45x15

    Burning by the end.

i do it from the floor (obv as i copy neo's routine)

I try to just explode up with my calves into the top of the movement and squeeze like a motherfucker, holding for ~1-2 sec then back down.

The short rest times fucking kill, but its worth it imo

    go to a smith machine,
get one of those box things they use for those ladies cardio classes, or use 25 lb plates,
put 315 on the bar of the smith,
stand on plates and continue with rasies, slight bend in knees

there are machines to help you out with that..
if you're looking for calf exercises that work the sides of your calves, try standing calf raises with your toes pointed in or out.

I continually reposition my feet. We have one of those seated things but the weight I need to use hurts my back when seated :hs:

And the standing machine hurts my back too, although my core is a lot better now so maybe I will try it again.

edit: part of this AM's workout:

standing calf raises (first time) bb
    cambered 135x10
    135x20
135x15 fuck that hurts my neck, switch bars
    225x10

    seated calf raise plates
    4x25
    4x25

edit edit: this is a lightweight workout, just trying the standing shit

if it hurts your back, you're lifting to heavy or you're doing them wrong

calves take a lot to get hit and heal fast as fuck.. dont stick to the regular 4 sets of 10-12 or whatever with them. do high as fuck reps til you fall over, wait 30 seconds until they feel normal again and do it again.

also good luck walking the next day.
