I don't get the contrast of salary in designers. I see postings for $10 / hr doing the same thing of another job offering 50k a year.

Makes me wonder how companies figures out their rate.

    Not really.

Because when you hire a designer for $10 / hour, you're going to get work equivalent to that of a designer getting paid $10 / hour. When you hire a company to design something for you, you're not hiring someone to do the design, you're hiring a multitude of people with varying skillsets. One person alone cannot have all the professional skillsets an agency would offer your website in which your website would greatly benefit from.

If a company is offering designers 50k/year, the company knows exactly what type of individual they're looking for. They're looking for someone who's capable of creating good designs. They're looking for someone who can enhance user experience and usability. They're looking for someone who can drive conversions with enhanced user experience.

A designer offering $10/hour likely does not have these skillsets. And if you see a designer who actually does have these skillsets, his rate is not going to be $10/hour, and you will see that their ongoing rate would likely be around $50/hour.

10/hr they really don't mind what the finished product is and if it creates leads to the business on its own
