I'm looking for suggestions for do-it-at home ab excercises. I havent seen a gym in a long time and I do plan to start going again this summer but till then I want to at least tone up a little before bathing suit season :hs: I'm not the least bit overweight (5'6"/140lb/small frame) just basically out of shape :o

So where should I start...do a ton of situps every night :dunno:

Don't do situps. Crunches is all you need.

crunches and butterfly kicks take care of it for me- military style, of course.

leg raises, and the bicycle crunch manuever is very effective.

If you want to do regular crunches at least get something to arch your lower back. SPRI makes some good rubber bladders that are good for that. Makes for a much more effective crunch.

If you want to "tone up" without going to the gym get outside and run. Sounds like you basically want to burn some fat off your midsection, unfortunatly you cant target the fat in one area. Also, I used to do a lot of distance running (5 miles and up) and never did anything else except a few situps (around 100-200 a night) and pull-ups (around 20 at once) and I was ripped as shit. You wont get big doing this but it sure will burn all the fat off, assuming you whatch what you eat. To lose weight you need to consume less calories per day then you are using so your body attacks the fat stored in various places.

Start by reading the n00b threads.

    You cannot spot reduce fat.

    cardio and nutrition/diet !

technically you can. think absolved and lipoderm-ultra. ;)

but effectiveness obviously depends on if you're on track with training/nutrition

Do people read threads anymore :uh: I said I'm not overweight/fat, I dont have a gut my stomach just has no tone to it. I'm not trying for the "ripped as shit" look I want to tone up thats all.

:bigthumb: for the serious replies I expected less smart ass replies in this section but this is OT thats asking too much

start doing cruches, and make sure to hit your lower abs (bicycle kicks, super crunches--which is having your legs raised and crunching in at the same time you crunch your abs)

i'd do 2-3 sets of 20 reps each, about 3x week, like mon wed fri

    start running every day

assuming your diet is fairly clean, you don't eat much but get enough protein, or you make healthy choices when selecting food, you will start to "tone up"

a better way would be to get into the gym and start lifting weights, as this defines your muscle and would make you look more "toned" for the summer

Could I use intense biking (mountain biking) to take the place of running? I was never much for running but I did used to hit up the offroad bike trails for a good 1-2 hour run several times a week. Only reason I dont go to the gym now is b/c money is kinda tight for a few months and the cheapest gym is $55/mo :wtc:

oh yeah..if you're going to do some intense biking, that's going to be using your muscle to move the bike around and what not. that'd be a great alternative. will you be doing this at least 3 times a week or so?

otherwise you could do daily moderate cardio 20-30 mins

don't do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach...that's a great way to lose muscle fast. and you know that no muscle = no tone

yea $55/mo for the YMCA its brand new and a really nice facility but thats about the cheapest...Golds and the other big chains forget it those are even more and most of the small local gyms went out of business b/c the larger ones put them under :hs: I'd be going right now if they had $28/mo 24 hour gyms around here

Gym prices are negotiable. Tell them you are interested but arent willing to pay that much... the lil sales twerp will get the manager and he will try to close you, in doing so he will often offer a better price.

My gym's price is usually 32/mo... I pay 22. You would be surprised what you can negotiate these days.
