    A10 Close Call

"ONE OF OUR SECTIONS WERE IN CONTACT WITH THE TALIBAN WHEN THE A10 CAME IN ON ITS SECOND RUN I THINK THE VIDEO WILL SAY THE REST "

    http://militaryvids.blogspot.com/2008/01/a10-close-call.html

That cannon sure makes an awesome sound, a great example of how the “Show of Force” thing would work. The sound of the beast would be enough to make me run.

The A-10 fires the 30×173mm round:

    Compared to 7.62×51m

I have loved the A10 ever since I worked on it when it first came out. It gives a whole new meaning to Close Air Support.

spooky shoots a round with another 10 mm in diameter.

that was pretty bad ass. I probably would have crapped myself if that was me though.

I still lay awake a night praying that the Army takes over the A-10 after the Air Force takes delivery of the JSF.

I know. I saw saying it looked like a spooky round next to the 30x173 instead of the 30x173 next to a 7.62.

Saw this when someone up'ed it on LiveLeak; then it got pulled because of some media violation (British gov't maybe?)..

Still.. most Taliban faggots don't get lucky like that and I would give my left nut with sperm on top to see the faces of the 30mm hitting their bodies

better not happen. that's one of the two airframes I'd trade a left appendage to fly. well, one of the four, but A10 is in the top two.

The pilots all said that flying the A10 was as close as you can get in a jet to just basic stick and rudder time. Nothing real fancy - just a fucking tough-as-nails airframe and a shitload of munitions strapped around you. :coold:

The JSF replacing the A-10 in the Air Force inventory is a done deal. Will be interesting to see what happens with the A-10 when that happens. It is scheduled to remain in service until 2028, and just received a major upgrade to the wing section last year, and an improved "glass cockpit". The main question will be how can the AF justify the JSF expenditure while maintaining and upgrading the A-10 yearly Will the AF mothball it, and place it in the bone yard, or will it find a new home? It has been an Army favorite for CAS since Desert Storm, and is becoming even more relevant on todays battlefield. Downside is repairing/maintaining the airframe due to parts either not being made or being out of stock.

once we get our targeting pod, we'll be giving all other CAS platforms a run for their money. longer loiter time, largest payload in the inventory, and with the pod we'll have a true positive ID capability. if they'd only give us a gun...

There is some really interesting technology coming out for CAS. The newest version of the AH64D Apache has the capability to control UAV's. Now you can have multiple UAV's designating targets for a lone Apache. Downside is I can have a midair incident with myself. :wtc:

maybe they'll make something new with a 30 mm gatling gun at the front:x:

oh well by 2028 I'll either be out or no longer flying all that often if I decide to take that route. I still don't have a clue as to what I want to do as far as careers goes.

The coolest part of the airframe is how the airframe reacts to an engine catching fire. It just lets it burn and fall off. Ingenious. I would love to fly one, but I'm more into the heavies...
