Spent 2 weeks in the Aegean, followed by a week in Italy and Germany (returned home last Sunday). My wife's family has managed to keep in touch with German relatives over the years, so we also spent 2 days near their homes in Oberndorf. Very cool town, and a center for German weapons manufacturers. Right outside our guest house was a Rheinmetal factory, and next to it was the Mauser factory. A short distance away is Heckler and Koch. I took my son and nephews to the Waffenmuseum, thought you guys might be interested in some of the pictures I took. Unfortunately I didn't have as much time as I would have liked, but it was still pretty interesting.

DISCLAIMER: The lighting was extremely shitty, so there are tons of shadows in most of the pictures and a couple of reflections of yours truly. Please PM Jamphat with any complaints.

As a side note, when we were in Egypt, my son noticed that our security guard was carrying an MP5K. My son asked him if that's what it was, and he replied "Yes-made in Germany. Very good". I immediately thought of all of the WMD'ers who would have blurted out spontaneously "HK SUCKS!"

This showed the various stages of stamping used to make a G3:

First time I had seen a G11 in the flesh-I had expected it to be small and compact, but it appeared to by neither.

That afternoon, we visited the small village (essentially a suburb of Oberndorf) to visit the homes of some of the relatives. While walking around the town, we passed a shuttered factory. My father-in-law pointed out the previous owner. Turns out another relative worked had worked there, it closed ~ 1 year ago. I was told that he was a machinist there, manufacturing "Machine Pistols". When I started taking pictures, they laughed, spoke in German, and gave me the :wtf: face.

+ 5 rep points to anyone who identifies the town.

One of my wife's cousin's is a pilot (flies an Airbus A320) and is finishing up building this LongEZ in his barn. The details are amazing (don't show real well in this photo), and his machine tools are a thing of beauty.

A fairly representative picture of what the general area looked like.

and  pictures. Never even thought to go to see H&K while I was in Germany. Visited BMW though

Some of those small villages (tons of them) are just incredible. Too bad we don't have the history that is over there.

Enjoy the rest of your trip

Forgot to mention that in addition to the weapons, there were also other items that Mauser has manufactured over the years displayed-Cars, 10-key adding machines, and typewriters. Sorry no pictures of those.

    Thanks-

I was told that HK doesn't offer factory tours, but that was what my in-laws told me. I was going to take more photos of some of the arms factories, but I was worried about having to answer awkward questions from the German Polizei at best, and getting detained and causing an international incident at worst.

If you look just above the WW1 anti-tank rifle, there were pictures of actual British tank kills made with that model. There were also pictures of it in action in the field.

That HK plant is in Oberndorf Neckar?

From what I remember, the HK plant is a lot smaller than compared to the Walther plant.
