I went to dinner with some friends on Saturday, and one of them was raving about this new chest routine he's doing. Basically, he does 4 sets of flat bench at 25 reps each and that's it.

Now, I understand the hypertrophic benefits of higher reps, but 25??

Also, I know that Christian Thib has a 5x5 routine based on 100 reps per workout. But I don't get how 100 reps of the same movement is beneficial? What does F&N think...

He said that he's up to 150lbs. But he's weighng in at around 200 so it would be similar to a pushup.

This is what I was thinking as well, it just sounded a little weird to me.

My buddy is doing some wierd routine with 5 sets of 20, which will get him a beach body. Some coach said he lost 60 lbs doing it, so he's all gungho. It's got alot of strange lifts in it, but whatever gets him motivated I guess.

I think doing more than 12 reps would drive me nuts.

It increases endurance. Not very good for hypertrophy or strength, though.

The only 20 reps routine that I know of that isnt gay is the 20 rep squat. that shit will make a man out of you.

amount of mechanical work is high but protein degradation is low leaving you with a subpar amount of hypertrophy

theres a difference between something killing you vs something making you stronger and bigger, 20 rep squats are very innefficient at the latter

i do them once every 2-3 weeks maybe on my volume day, more for endurance than anything else. its a good shock to the muscles esp after working in the 2-5 rep range so often.. at least i think. :hs:

any increase in endurance will take away from strength and vice versa youre playing tug of war

These high rep routines are meant to be just a temporary shock to a muscle group so you aren't rutted in doing the same sets/reps continuously. They aren't meant to become whole routines because they dont work for longterm strength/size gains.
That was the idea behind that whole '100-rep' workout sceme that came out.
