I just bought the panasonic fz10

Which is a 4 megapixel 12x zoom (400+ mm equivalent) with image stabilization. Flash hotshoe, great host of features for eye viewers (i . e. rule of thirds grid overlay) and so on, for only $380...
the fz20 is one step above just about at $500 and contains this as well as many other features. It is nearly as good as the digital rebel with the exception of megapixel rating... and you don't have to buy additional zoom lenses. If zoom is your thing, then the fz10 or fz20 is for you at half the price of a digital rebel.
