I've had a Lite-on before and was going to get the NEC, but I'm afraid it'll be very noisy when it spins up to read the disc.

    Any recommendations besides NEC?

I have 2 Lite-On drives and I haven't heard any drives that are quieter. My parents have a year old Artec drive in their desktop that literally sounds like a weedwacker when it's reading a disc.

I sent back my Lite On because it was wayy too noisy reading a CD.

I have an LG DVD+-RW and a Sony CD-RW, and they're both quiet. I can't really hear either when they're spinning up. The Sony is a little louder than the LG, but not a whole lot.
