Bad exposure and uninteresting composition.
I tried various exposures, and if the figure was made any brighter, the background became even more blown out.
what is it?
It's a tiny little carving of an Asian (japanese, most likely) man with his head in his hands sitting cross-legged, in what seems to be a position of prayer. It's like 1"x1"x1"..

On first glance it looks like a bad case of hemorrhoids doesn't it
Put a reflector just behind the camera to put some light where you want it.
You gotta shoot the object so that you don't have crazy, distracting highlights in the background. If you went around to the other side, it would have been a much more flattering picture. Try it out
