Hey guys, i havent really got into the core capabilities of a mac. I have been playing around with its main features so far.

My questions are, what are the built in apps in panther/tiger that you use to maintain it? Like windows has disc cleanup for its temp files etc.. and disc defrag. Is there such maintenancce progs on this platform that would maximize the usage of this computer? Any input would be greatl appreciated.

no need to defrag, the system will take care of itself for you. The only thing I ever do to run the repairPermissions option. You can find this in Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. I only do that when weird stuff starts to happen which isn't very often. Basically, this is one of the reasons I love OS X, you don't need to do very much to keep it going.

That's what I use. It runs repair permissions and other built-in maintenence scripts, as well as clearing caches, deleting cookies, etc....

Cocktail is also a great program. Takes care of all maintenance for you.

OS X runs it's own periodical tasks for you daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.

I thought it only ran those tasks if the computer is on during certain times.

    :ugh:

how misinformed is that!?!? Actually being external has NOTHING to do with needing or not needing a defrag. The problem is that the apple file system is not robust enough to withstand a defrag...

:ugh2: sorry to disappoint you, but i'm very informed. os x does defrag optimization sort of work all the time in the background so that you never need to be left w/the responsibility of having to do it yourself...internal and external drives, of course. and the apple file system is called hfs+, for future references
