So I was having an argument with my roommate... I believe that 5 consecutive shots from a Glock 9MM shot from 50ft at a charging bear would stop him. He thinks that this is not the case and the amount of fat that bears pack would protect them from the 9mm.

I wanted to see what OT thought about this situation and who would win...bear or 9mm?

From 50 feet away you would be lucky if you put one round on target.

A lot would depend on what round you were using.

I certainly wouldn't count on a 9mm as my sole defense against a bear though.

I would imagine it would make a difference what type of bear it was. If it was a grizzly I highly doubt it would even notice. If you are talking black bear, the noise alone would probably scare it off.

if you in between the bear and her cubs, its likely you are going to have to kill the bear to stop it

having said that....5 shots with a freaking 9mm?? you can't be serious. highly doubtful

Maybe if you had a heavy (147 gr.) FMJ bullet that had good penetration. I think a hollow point would expand too much on contact and not pierce through the bone and hide.

Sure why not it works for polar bears :hsughno:

I wouldn't want to shoot any bear at that distance with a handgun really, definently not a 9mm.

  10. 9mm vs. angry bear = angrier bear + dead you.

50ft from a charging bear? Estimates put their top speed at 35-40mph. At 35mph the bear will cover that 50ft in a little under a second. I don't think it would matter much what caliber you had in your hand. Bear will kill you. You will not kill bear.

You guys are nuts. A .22LR is sufficient to kill an angry grizzly so a 9mm, let alone a JHP 9mm is overkill. There won't be much bear left if you hit it with FIVE shots.

    Idiots.

If an angry bear is charging you from 50ft away and you have anything other than a high powered rifle/shotgun, you're dead. Period.

Hell, even if you DID have a high powered rifle or shotgun, the chances of you getting a kill shot under that much stress are pretty slim.

9MM isn't going to do much against a bear, aside from piss it off. I wouldn't want to try and take down a bear with any handgun.

10mm is fairly effective for bear (in a defensive role), iirc.

FUCK NO a 9mm would not be effective against a charging bear. :noes:

Agreed on a high-powered rifle or shotgun.

I don't even know if I'd want a shotgun. :hs:

Maybe some 7.62x54 steel core, or a nice Barrett .50. :x:

A semi-auto 12ga or 10ga running some HP slugs would do some serious damage to a bear. I'd still prefer a military rifle, though. 30 rds of 7.62x39 would be helpful in that situation.
