    which is cheaper to build?
which would be better for just a range gun?
if i build a 9mm version is it simple to change it to a .223 version?

Range use for what distance? I'm not sure 9mm would be as accurate at longer distances than .223, but it is a lot cheaper to shoot than .223.

You'd probably need a completely different upper to switch b/t the two.

I'm sure some AR-15 experts will be around though.

less parts needed to build 5.56 upper, and 5.56 parts are cheaper, for short range shooting the 9mm would be fine and fun cheaper to shoot. basically for 9mm you'll need same parts as 5.56 minus 5.56 barrel, and 5.56 bolt, 9mm specific ones are a bit more. I have both I started with 5.56, and bought a complete 9mm upper over the summer. the lowers are 100% the same all differences are in upper, to go from 5.56 to 9mm, i swap upper and put 9mm magblock in the mag well.

You can pick up a complete Rock River Arms 9mm upper for about $450 over at ar15.com. The mag block is $125 though and you use uzi mags. You also have to replace some of the hammer parts and internals for about $50. To switch back to .223 you would change the whole upper, switch back to the .223 internals, and take out the mag block. You can't use a 2 stage trigger with a 9mm upper from what I understand.

Not familiar with the RRA upper, I have the Oly upper, no internal parts in the lower require changing to go between 5.56 and 9mm, also uses Sten mags which I prefer over the modified uzi mags $5 vs $40 mag's, I believe the 2 stage part is correct, Oly upper will work with all standard internals aftermarket gets iffy leaning towards problems.

For plinking I use silver bear and wolf they run about 2.99 a box, 140-$150, for 1000 rounds, for good shooting going for moa I been using handloads, but you can get decent stuff for like $7 a box.

i noticed that you can get the stripped, forged lower receiver and a lower receiver parts kit (standard trigger) for $225. does that mean when you put it all together its a complete lower?

:edit: nevermind, that doesnt have a stock on it

Go on over to AR15.com in the for sale forums, last I looked RRA stripped lowers were going for like $125, and parts for $50, should be able to find a used like new standard A2 stock for like $25-30.. And you can find some other brand stripped lowers for even cheaper.

Nothing wrong with adding an optic, better trigger or flashlight, just dont become tactical, we dont want to see you posting pics up with optics, 2 lights, laser, forward grip, etc..

Yeah they can be done seperate but if your buying the upper from him and if he also sells might be able to work a better deal, depending on which ones, $60-140, or just look for someone selling there detachable carry handle you can snag them up cheap sometimes.. I prefer the flipups though thye look better
