 My buddy claims he's getting a 980ci custom made so that he'll drop it into a 69' Chevelle that he's planning on buying. Is that size engine possible / useful?

Wouldn't that fucker be too tall and block half his view if it even fit in the first place?

I wouldn't be worried about the weight of the motor, it shouldn't be that much more than a regular big block...but christ--I'd be worried about traction! The wheels are just gonna spin all day long unless he would ride around on heated slicks.

actually, wouldn't that weight his front down ... too much? I know very little about cars but wouldn't that take traction off his rear wheels?

    1. Displacement has nothing to do with actualy wieght of the engine or it's external demensions. It's simply a measure of bore x stroke of crank x number of cylinders x 3.1416

    2. The largest practicle engines I know of only come out to 800 or so cid. Using a World products BBC, you can easily built a streetable 720.

    3. 980 cid is probably possible, but it would be impracticle, and very expensive. It would require an aftermarket block, wich alone is going to drive the price up several thousand. That said, unless you are building an extreme machine for exhibition purposses, there is no reason to go there, when you can simply build a more practicle and probably more powerful engine in a more commen displacement. Consider that a 510 alky car can make 2000+hp.

There was a Mustang at the last car show i was at running a bored and stroked 460. Came out to 531 cubic inches. :eek3: I've seen a bit bigger engines in drag only cars, but that's definitely the biggest displacement i've ever seen from a stock block.

Jay Leno has an 1800ci engine in a custom built roadster he had built. The engine is a V8 I think, and came out of a tank (literally).

The biggest conventional BBC and BBF engines built right now are just over 800" like has been said. I've been around a couple of them at idle, and it's amazing how docile they seem at their 1,500 rpm idle.
