Nope, AMD64 started as 754, then 940, now 939. Buy a new proc, and a new MOBO? 940 is old.

940 was the mobo's for the high end a64 cpus before the 939 debut. i.e. opterons and the FX chips.

754 and 940 are EOL, 939 is the way to go. As to where to find some 940's i am sure if you look around you can find some.

754 isn't really EOL like 940 is. 754 still provides a good "value" platform.

True, but the 754 won't be around much longer. If he is looking for an easily upgradeable platform in the next few years then the 939 will allow this. The 754 is still a great buy though but i would recommend the 939, it will save him money in the long run.

    Wrong.

754 and 940 will be around for quite a while to come. 754 = Semprons for the budget platform. 940 = Opterons for workstation boards.

Retailers selling them and AMD not manufacturing them are completly different things, i have read that AMD will soon no longer be making 754's.

S754 is getting phased out completely, Semprons are starting to come in the 939 package and opterons won't change to 1002 or whatever pinout for awhile, the only single socket 940 board I know of though is an asus, and thats pretty much the same as throwing your money away
