What is the reliability like? I am looking for a 4wd SUV for camping and winter mountain travel. School me.

cherokees are moar reliable than grands

4.0 doesnt work as hard in the xj vs zj
only get the aw4 tranny, stock in the xj, various trannys in the zj, all other than the aw4 are shit.

    Agree w/ Bernie.

My family had a 98... never had issues but we only had it as a lease for 3 years. It was a 4.0/auto/2wd.

I also think the XJ is an overall more reliable vehicle. But the GCs could be had with coil springs front and rear and the 2wd/part time 4wd/full time 4wd which is really handy.

We bought a 98 4.0/4x4 GC with 130,000 and now it's up to 170,000 with no issues. Gets beat on a lot, too. I averaged 17mpg over the winter (lots of warm-up time and dorifto time).

Only major complaint is the lack of a LSD rear.
