What are the chances of a 9 mil NOT killing someone when shot in the head at point blank range, like the gun right on the persons skull? In other words is a 9 mil bullet generally gona break right through the skull or deflect off?

my reason for asking is just to understand some of the strengths and weaknesses of different types of guns, i dont know alot about guns but i do know 9 mil's are not a very strong gun, at least not compared to a .45 or a 44

The 9mm will penetrate the skull and exit the other side in a spectacular spray of blood, brain matter, and bone.

    Just like a .38, 45, 44, 357, 10mm....

Plenty of LEO agencies, along with the Army, use 9mm handguns as sidearms.
They'll do the job just fine. They ain't gonna be bouncing off the skull and shit.
And 9mm's are "weak guns"? I don't even know where to start. You're judging the power of the GUN by the caliber it shoots. That makes absolutely no sense.

It really just depends on a lot of scenarios. Angle, distance, movement, etc.
But the most important is the bullet itself. Is it just a round nose, or is it a JHP?
Then what KIND of JHP makes a huge difference as well. There's a lot to this.

But a 9mm will penetrate a skull at point-blank range. No doubt. You've been misinformed.

Thanks for the help. Im assuming JHP is a hollow point bullet, actually that brings up another question which isnt really as idiotic, if you use a HP at point blank range what different affects are you going to get compared to when using a round nose?

    Jacketed Hollow Point.
A round nose is just going to go straight through, the wound channel will only be as big as the bullet itself.
A hollow point bullet will expand and cause much more damage.

Either way, its point-blank, chances are good they're gonna die.

look at the gel test posted.

FMJ will penetrate and is prone to keep going and possibly end up hitting whoever is behing whatever you shoot. A JHP is meant to release all it's energy in the first targer it hits and expands in size since it mushrooms out .

I heard if you shoot someone with a 9mm, sometimes the bullet bounces off them and comes back and puts your eye out. A guy at teh range said he saw it happen.

A fully expanded 9mm really isn't all that much smaller than a 40 or 45. Sure, there IS a size difference... but at point-blank to the head, I'd say its negligible.

Hell a .22 will penetrate the skull. The only difference is the 9mm will exit the back of the head and take brains with it while the .22 will bounce around inside tearing your brains to shreds.
