I'm trying to install the Surefire fore end on my Remington 870. I have the synthetic 7 round version pictured below. I can't for the life of me loosen the magazine cap to disassemble the weapon. It's not just me...I've used pliers padded with towels and the damn thing just won't budge...made a scratch in the finish while trying that move. Is there a trick I just don't know about?

    Pics of gun for reference:

I've got the same gun with a SF.

I used vice grips. Slightly scratched mine, too. IIRC, I used one of those rubber helper pad thingies that one would use to open a jar.

a local gun shop should have a wrench they'd probably let you use if you brought the forend in.

its just hard as fuck. get a strap wrench or use plies to grab on to it. or try a rubberband and turn by hand.

It took me weeks to figure it out

Yeah, there is no "special" miracle wrench.

    Yeah, ditto.

Hit up Lowes for a set of Kobalt strap wrenches. There's a pack of three for about $10-$15.

    1. Take off barrel clamp
    2. Unscrew mag extension by hand
    3. Wrap towel around magazine nut
    4. Twist off with Channel-lock plyers (nut has locking grooves underneath so it'll sort of click the first few turns)

Mine came right apart using this method?

So I got the gun disassembled but this damned nut won't come off, even with the tool that Surefire supplied. Fuck.

Got a roofer's hammer with straight claws?

That's what I used to get mine apart.

Maybe your treating it to nicely? That was the problem when I tried removing my sights off my springfield.
