I'm planning on building a new gaming PC in the next couple of weeks and was going to go with a P35 mobo and a 8800 GTX.

Now I'm leaning toward a 680i and two 8800 GTs in SLI.

    Thoughts?

The thing is that I've been waiting for a while now and last I've heard the 9000 series might be released as late as Q2 2008.

8800 GT in SLI is tempting because they're inexpensive and perform only about ~ 10% less than the GTX. The only game that seems to bring these cards to their knees is Crysis, but I don't want to play the waiting game just so I can play on very high settings. :dunno:

    SLI can be flaky sometimes.

And I wonder how much difference in cost that it would be between a pair of the GT cards, and a GTX?

Yeah I've heard mixed things about SLi and I pretty much wrote off using it until recently.

Cost wise it comes out to be about the same with a GTX being around $500 plus and a single 8000 GT being around $250.

Just wondering if anyone has much experience using SLi and if it's worth the hassle. Plus if there are issues with it in Vista versus XP

    A single GTX has 768MB 384-bit.
Two 8800GTs with 512MB 256-bit each will still be limited to 512MB.
For high res with all the eye candy enabled, 768MB > 512MB.
That's just one example how SLI is worthless.

prty much in the same boat as OP.
thing with waiting for the 9 series is when they come out they're gonna cost a whopass load of money,
i'm interested to see some benchmarks of 8800gt's in sli vs say an ultra, at lower resolutions.

I've seen some benchmarks and they seem rather inconsistent. In some games like Oblivion, 8800GT in SLi seems to make a substantial difference.

In others it seems to make no difference at all, UT3.

    For example:

I plan on running at 1600x1200, not sure if it's worth it. Cheap though so :dunno:

Mostly bragging rights. When there 8800's were first released I couldn't believe the ones who picked up 2 GTXs at like 700+ each :ugh:
