Hey, I need some advice on finding a laptop for my mother. She just needs the basics for wordprocessing, web browsing, but most importantly it needs to be LIGHTWEIGHT. Anything in the 14-15 range? Thanks.

I was going to say check out Dell's refurb for a good deal...

Than I noticed the price of the Inspiron 1501

    Lenovo N100.

Dell is a bad idea. Horrible performance, and horrible build quality. A refurb dell is just a guaranteed second-hand defective unit.

Thanks for the recommendations. How are notebooks from HP? They seem pretty solid and look fairly attractive.

they look okay, but are built poorly and underperform.

    I'm impressed. I didn't know you could get a 15" Lenovo for $800.

    From my experience...

    HP is not that great.
Dell is cheap, but don't expect it to last 5 years. (Thought mine is 2-3 years strong right now).
IBM/Lenovo costs a bit more, but is well worth it.

Most common retail laptops underperform, although Sony isn't bad, they still use piss-poor quality parts.
