Great. Just great. I've got two big jars full of coins that WERE supposed to be spending money for my trip to Europe. Now, every time I look at them... I'm going to see an AK calling my name.

I read the title thinking you melted down the metal coins to forge into a new gun. That would have been awesome .:wtc:

Me too. Now that I have an AR it just feels like I need an AK in the spot next to it in the safe.

If you buy local WASR's aren't that bad you can check to see if the sights are straight and make sure the magwell isn't mangled. If you got a couple hundred extra to spend get a lancaster, nonCAI tantal, or saiga/vepr conversion.

Haven't shopped out local prices in awhile but any caliber of the fixed stock WASR's should cost under $400 they come in x39, 5.45 and 5.56. The Lancasters run around $600 I think they're all x39 they have a nice finish on the metal and wood. Decent nonCAI tantal will run around $600 also, they're 5.45 you can get them fixed stock or with the wire folder. CAI ones are cheaper but typical shitty century fit and finish and non chrome usa barrel. Saiga and VEPR conversions generally run around $550-1000 depending how thorough the conversion is, some just have the trigger moved and a p grip installed, while others are full AK10x clones. If your mechanically inclined you can pick up a regular SAIGA in x39 or 5.56 for around $300 OTD and convert it yourself with about $100 worth of parts.

WASR1's are x39, 2's 5.45, 3 5.56. Generally they all come with wood stocks and have been converted from single stack to normal double stack mags, I've seen new ones for sale before that were converted to underfolders and with crapco sidefolders.

At the moment with the milsurp 5.45 is the cheapest($120 per 1080rds), but when the surp stuff runs dry its going to cost the same as 7.62x39($185ish a case wolf). 5.56 being the most pricey ammo.

7.62x39 is the original caliber for the AK, but all 3 calibers are in use today. Russia mainly uses 5.45 today, most former Warsaw countries who have joined or are trying to get into NATO switched over to 5.56 AK's.

For less than $400 you're basically going to have to get a WASR, which isn't a bad thing. I bought a WASR2 (5.45x39) and never looked back. Great rifle, great round, and if you handpick it from a local store you can make sure the front sight isn't canted and make sure the mag well isn't too wobbly.

Make sure the gas block is straight, and try to make sure you get one that has the G2 trigger in it (it'll say on the trigger). My 5.45 came with a G2, Cracker's didn't.
