Boy charged for allegedly bringing bullets to school

LASALLE - An 8-year-old boy faces a charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly bringing live ammunition to school Friday.

LaSalle police were called to Northwest Elementary School after the boy brought three .22 caliber bullets to the school and showed them to staff and students.

His guardian, Corinne McDunnin, 42, of 1007 11th St. was charged with possession of ammunition without a firearm owner's identification card.

I'm glad my state is spending money prosecuting dangerous criminals. Jesse Jackson can now sleep well at night knowing Illinois will be taking care of this dangerous 8 year old.

Luckily ammo without a foid isn't a felony.

this happened when i was in 1st grade. Some kid brought .223 bullets and tried to sell them to kids. When to police came he tried to hide them but they found all of them. He had something like 30 or so of them.

kinda a hand-slap charge, but if the mother gave the kid bullets, or left them in easy-access, then she def deserves some punishment.

How come? Its ammo, not a gun. Think of all the other far more dangerous things people have laying around their houses like forks.

sorry. as much as I love guns, there is NO reason for an eight year old child to be allowed to bring ammo to school.

I agree, but you said his parent should be punished for it being accessible to him. Thats what I want you to defend. You just can't lock everything away from kids, ammo is relatively safe. There is no reason to bring charges against them. Send him home, tell mom not to let it happen again.

i think we can all agree that ammo acts like firecrackers when heated up (and not in the barrel of a gun)

would you want your 8 year old to go to school with firecrackers? i know theres probably no rule against it, but this is AMMO we're talking about.

Um, no. It is simply not appropriate to give a 8 year old ammo. There is no purpose for it. If they left the ammo accessible to a 8 year old and did not explicitly give it to him, then it's neglegent.

correct, you cant lock EVERYTHING away from kids, but you sure as hell make an effort to lock away dangerous things.

when i say that i mean lock them away at times when they're not in use since i know a lot of people take their 8 year olds hunting/shooting etc. if thats the case, you need to establishing boundaries when its NOT ok to touch/handle guns/ammo until they're old enough to understand the dangers associated with them.

I had access to ammo when I was 8, I knew if I screwed with it I'd catch a ass beating though so I didn't fuck with it. I don't think the kid should go with out some sort of discipline but I think a criminal charge on him is a bit overboard for an 8 year old.

Me too. It wasn't too much later that I had a .22 in the corner of my bedroom. I knew NOT to touch it without my dad there to supervise.

I see no reason to have to lock up all ammo, we're talking .22 here, as long as the guns are secured. I grew up knowing there was ammo and shotgun shells in random coffee mugs in my dad's room and around the house.

I had an ammo collection by the time I was 8. Nothing bad happened. Hell, my grandpa probably hunted his own food by the time he was 8.

Nothing wrong with a kid having ammo.
