Just bought a new MBP and I want to get a 500gb drive before I get all settled in. Is getting a 7200rpm drive worth it? I've read some reviews on Newegg and people say you can hear the drive all the time. Not that it matters, just a fact.

I'm a big Western Digital fan and Newegg only has Seagate 7200rpm drives.

I put a WD 320GB 7200RPM drive in my MacBook... it made a huge performance difference. It is a little louder, but you really have to listen closely to hear it. It hasn't effected my battery life significantly either.

I'm not personally a huge fan of Seagate, so I would either wait for a Hitachi or WD 500GB version, or just step down to a WD 320GB drive.

I already have a 320 in my MBP. I'm not going to pay just to jump to 7200rpm.

its worth it, i even saw a speed boost in my original Macbook Core Duo. Put in a 320 7200 16Cache Seagate drive and it rocks.

Just put a 320GB seagate momentus in my MBP. I noticed a difference in boot time and opening applications. At first it was sluggish but repairing permissions fixed that and I am very happy with the upgrade now.

How did you transfer everything? Just just got my MBP and I'm kinda holding off on fully setting it up until I get a new HD.

I put my stock drive in a cheap enclosure ($19 or something) and copied all the data off of it... now I use it for backups.

I did the same, put my old drive in an external. Just have the drive plugged in while you install leopard to your new drive and it askes if you want to copy certain things. Worked out damn good I was impressed.

I just added a 7500 RPM WD Black, and the difference is night and day. I took the old HD out and have it in an external enclosure.

I put a WD 7200 RPM 320 in my white macbook

it was a lot faster, but it caused so much vibration I took it out and put the 70 back in there

    What size? I want a 500gb but WD doesn't make a 7200rpm 500gb laptop drive. :(

There was too much vibration even with the rubber isolator mounts?

my white one doesnt have any rubber isolator mounts

it just screws onto the bracket if I remember correctly, been a few months now

but I did sell it to a friend who's using it in his unibody macbook (not the pro) and he has no issue, but his has the rubber mounts he said

I have the 320. I wanted the 500, but like you said, WD doesn't make one.

I have one of the first gen MBP Core Duos with an 80 GB HDD. I would like to upgrade and $80 for that 320 GB 7200rpm Western Digital is a pretty good deal. Only thing is installation. Seems like a pain in the ass to install compared to regular Macbooks. Might be better to have a 3rd party place install it for me. Any recommendations?
