I wanna buy one of these nice zoon lenses, but there is the sigma 70-200, the nikon 80-200 and the ultra expensive nikon 70-200 VR

any good place where to buy them, usual places seem to list them at retail price

Ill probably be going with the 80-200 or the sigma, any opinion on this?

and finally is VR really worth $1k more?

Post some of your pics and I will tell you how much you should spend within your budget.

If your pics suck then you shouldn't really be buying new lenses in the first place, but if you must at least not spend anywhere near a grand as it will not improve your pictures one bit.

If you must, the 70-200 F4 canon would be great for a start.

    He has a Nikon...

I have the Sigma 70-200 Canon mount and I'm happy with it.

Ok spend as much as you want. You're good enough to where buying a real good lens wouldn't be a waste. :p

Nikon is hawt! I have the 80-200 f2.8 D, and it produces wonderful results under most conditions.

However, the 80-200 f2.8 AF-S is a far superior choice if you can find one, they discontinued it when the 70-200 vr came out. VR is hopelessly worthless IMO.

your crazy. I have the 70-200 vr and its a pretty good differance. Though maybe not worth the extra money itself, the quality overall of it makes it worth it.

Get the most expensive lens you can afford.

That way you'll have less money in your wallet weighing you down and you can walk around and take pictures without getting tired of dragging the cash around.

The 70-200VR is in stock at B&H for $1,629 -$150 MIR. I just got my rebate check in the other day. I bought it about a month ago just to shoot 5 HS football games with it, and I already made $500 back on it from those games. Therefore I only paid about $1k for it.

Yeah, that's usually the case. don't sweat it, they inspect that shit :) just got with one rated in any of the top 3 categories and you'll be set. I bought mine new from adorama.com (the af-d... I want afs!)

And no, I'm not crazy in saying the VR is the suck. I shoot sports more than nature... if I wanted to shoot birds I'd need at least 300mm so this lens would not work, if I wanted to shoot close things I"d use a different lens and a tripod. so, for me, VR doesn't justify 3-500 dollars. Maybe it does for you! But if I'm shooting any kind of action and can't get at least 1/125th (for people talking) they're gonna move no matter how steady the shot is :( plus it's too bulky.

I have the 70-200 VR and the VR is worth every penny to me. There are times where I will need shutter speed 1/60 sec or faster to freeze the motion from the people, but I still benefit from VR all the time especially when shooting indoor.

Though I wish that it is sharper at f2.8. It is a lot shaper at f4 then f2.8. But that's what the 200 f2.0 VR is for I guess.

maan im still undecided the date for the purchase is approaching too damn fast and I still don't know, these are the prices ive seen

nikon 70-200VR 1650 (1500 after rebate) and I saw a demo version in Adorama going for 1500
Nikon 80-200 AF-S 1150 for an nearly flawless one, 1000 for most
Sigma 70-200 EX DG APO HSM 729

im almost starting to lean for the Sigma but since now my magazine shooting is starting to increase in demand I know ill be more in concerts where the VR should really shines..but damn 1500 will leave me broke.

    Such a freaking hard decision.

    70-200 VR hands down.

You can try to buy a used 70-200. Might be able to find one off FM around $1300 or so sometimes.

    www.keh.com FTW

They sell used/new equipment at good prices, and with the used stuff, they ALWAY underate the stuff, so if it says good condition, it will come in damn close to new condition.

I get all of my shit from them.

I am sure another rebate is around the corner. It will be called "Spring into savings."
