Stray bullet from gun club nearly hits 16 YO girl in her bedroom
HOPKINTON- A bullet fired from a semi-automatic military rifle at a gun club traveled roughly three-quarters of a mile before shattering the bedroom window of a home in Hopkinton, narrowly missing a 16-year-old girl.

At the time of the incident, the Meldon family believed a stray golf ball from the nearby Hopkinton Country Club was the cause of the broken window.

But the next day, Robin Meldon and her daughter, Perri, found the .30 caliber round in a pile of laundry.

Police traced the steel-core bullet back to the Southborough Rod and Gun Club. They believe it was fired from an SKS rifle, once used by the Soviet army.

"It was almost as if a marksmen had aimed for her head," said Jerry Meldon, when describing the bullet's proximity to his daughter.

Rich Fitzgerald, president of the gun club, told the MetroWest Daily News the bullet bounced off an earthen berm, crossed the golf course and hit the Meldon's home on Saddle Hill Road.

"We're very concerned with what happened. We're striving to make sure it doesn't happen again," Fitzgerald told the newspaper.

Since the April 14th incident, the club banned that particular type of bullet and is working to double the size of the berms behind the firing range targets.

But the Hopkinton Country Club issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying it's seeking an immediate court injunction to ban shooting at the club.

How does a flying bullet "bounce" off a dirt berm?

yeah, that didn't happen the way they say it did.

and if it was sitting in a pile of laundry, it wasn't going to kill anyone.

Didn't you read the story a while back about the bullet that was sitting in a box then freed itself and strangled a baby to death?

    Oh wait....

Only reason noone in that house died is cause after the initial ricochet the round went through a school 50 miles away, then killed a pregnant women 80 miles away before ricocheting back towards where it came.

I'm surprised that it didn't detour through the local middle school before attacking that innocent pile of laundry.

Not that uncommon for rounds to skip off a berm.

    :werd:

Then, the gun club bans a bullet caliber that has less velocity than a lot of other rounds.

i like how the guy says "It was almost as if a marksmen had aimed for her head," yeah, because you know how many people who can hit a baby-sized head from 3/4 mile away with a fucking SKS? :ugh:

edit: just went on google; thats like 1300+ yards

If there was no change in trajectory it would be easy to have a round go 1300 yards, but this seems out of place and just a freak accident.

    1320 yards.

bullfuckingshit an sks can shoot 3/4 of a mile, none the less ricochet that far and STILL have the velocity to not just break, "shatter" a window. bull fucking shit. all day long.

how do they know it was fired from an SKS. i mean there's several semi-auto rifles that use 7.62x39. how does banning 7.62x39 at that range solve the problem? and i'm with the thread starter, people that buy houses next to firing ranges and then complain about the noise, etc, need to :gtfo:

my point was that the average person who visits that range probably can't hit a head-sized target at that distance with that rifle.

and if they could, they'd be using a better rifle

If it hits the berm at some kind of extreme angle, though?

I wouldn't think it would ricochet if it hit an earthen berm head on. :dunno:
Not saying the round was shot straight at the berm though... It sounds to me like some guy might have been dickin' around if his round was able to ricochet off a berm.

nah, if a bullet hits a rock or something, it will ricochet away. I've seen bullets hit a rock, and then hit the berm again :dunno:

Lower angle berms are alot worse for skipping rounds out, but even on high angle berms if it hits a rock they can skip. Thats why I think people who go out and shoot at cans and shit on the ground and think they don't need a backstop because they are "shooting into the ground" are retarded.

Maybe someone shot it up at like a 45° angle or something? I find that much more believable than having the round richochet off a berm.

I'm thinking that too. Someone sat down at a bench and popped one off early or some shit. Fully cleared any berm.

I can see a round traveling that far, but not off a ricochet. :dunno:

Time for a new assault weapon ban. Clearly these guns are designed to kill children.

And their heat-seaking homing bullets even hide in laundry. Sneaky fuckers. BAN 'EM!
