Well currently my old JVC 5.1 reciever is showing its age and lack of quality. Im looking to upgrade to something better, preferably with the ability to do 7.1, though i plan to use it only for 5.1 surround right now. Also 100 watts per channel would be nice. HDMI abilities and an on screen control would be nice but not necissary, as well as a speaker calibration tool. I should also mention im hoping to stay around or preferably under 500 bucks.

So far ive been looking at Harman Kardons and Onkyo recievers. Onkyo seems to be the best value and able to fill most of my needs.... im just unable to narrow it down to a single reciever.

    Any recommendations?

I have the onkyo 605 and I love it. I really wish I had waited a month or two and gotten the 705. It has 3 HDMI inputs instead of 2. It has a built in fan(or two). It allows custom naming for all the inputs vs. the standard on the 605. It also has a little bit more power.

I just recently got a 605 and I love it. It's really cool to only have 1 HDMI cable running between the reciever and the TV, and have the reciever handle all the switching.

My biggest complaint about this reciever is the 90 watts per channel. I'm just used to more...

    Overall great reciever though.

Go with the 705, the 605 gets hot and it really needs a fan. The three HDMI inputs(and maybe 2 outputs) would be really nice, at least for my setup. I think the 705 also has better up conversion for the video(different chip) as well as it can take a 5.1 signal and make it 7.1. Not as good as true 7.1 off of a blu-ray, but still supposed to be pretty good.

I'll be going with the Onkyo 705 once I get some money to upgrade from my POS JVC receiver. HDMI is appealing, simple one wire hookup will keep it nice and simple. I need to start looking at speakers next, I already have a good center channel but my other speakers/sub are pretty lacking.

Have you decided what you're running speaker wise?
