GUN ~$600 budget. Build an (CA legal) AR or AK or buy another pistol.

Much of my decision hinges on either of the options become illegal in CA in the near future.

From what I understand the Px4 is losing its approved status at the end of the year and Beretta is not interested in attempting to renew it. It seems like ARs and AKs are always on the brink of being deemed illegal in CA.

Pistol grip isn’t really important on either the AR or AK, as I was used to a mini14 so a rifle like grip is fine. Other evil features don’t really interest me much either.

    What should I do?

Correct me if I am wrong - New to guns and I am in Texas so I dont have to worry - But once you own say an AK and then they make it illegal cause its painted black and not pink or some other stupid thing... Isnt yours basically grandfathered for the most part? Obviously it depends on the law - but if you own one now you are good to go.

You could probably move to Nevada for $600.

Maybe when I finish school and the housing market is going back up in CA so I can make some money when I sell.

If you legally own an AR reciever or an AK reciever (or even a built gun, doesnt matter), and one day they decide to ban the particular model you own you can register it as an assault weapon.

at that point, pistol grip, detach mag, adjustable stock, etc doesnt matter: you can have it configured however you want.

why not buy an AR lower and buy a pistol? That way if they ban ARs you still have a pre ban lower.

It's rained once in the last 3 months here :coold: and it's been anywhere from 70-100 this summer so far. Everyone should move to Oregon.

The shotgun is. But I'll have to ask about the rifle. I've seen Saiga grip "conversions" though on AKs.

You are sort of right, Saiga was listed as a model, but as made by Kalishnikov, apparently the new ones arent made by Kalishinkov so they are technically legal. Its still a bit grey if you ask me, but hell the whole damned thing is grey.

So it's pretty much like any off list receiver then.

A little more grey since makes like doublestar, enterprise, stag, mega, etc. are not even mentioned. Its pretty obvious that the DOJ wanted to ban Saigas since they are in fact listed but since they are now made by Izhmash instead of Kalishnikov as they are listed, they're legal.
